The Maker's Story

A craft that begins
with the tree

Root & Stave was born from a simple conviction: that the objects we carry through life should be worth keeping. Not bought and forgotten. Not replaced next season. Made — with intention, with care, with the specific gravity of real American hardwood in your hands.

Every walking stick and wood piece begins with the selection of the blank: black walnut from the Midwest, white ash from the Appalachians, osage orange from the river bottoms of the Great Plains. The grain tells you how to work it. You listen, or you fight it — and fighting the wood never ends well.

What comes out the other side is not a product. It is an object. One that will look better in twenty years than it does today, that will carry the memory of who gave it and who used it. That is what we make.

Objects with soul are not mass-produced. They are made by a person, from a tree, with a plan that outlasts the season they were sold in.

The Making

From forest floor
to your hand

There are no shortcuts in this work. Each piece moves through the same patient sequence — selection, shaping, finishing, fitting — and nowhere in that sequence is there a machine that does the thinking.

Selecting the blank

Every piece starts with choosing the right wood. Black walnut for weight and depth of color. White ash for resilience and straight grain. Osage orange — bois d'arc — for pieces that will take punishment outdoors. The blank is chosen for the stick it will become, not the other way around.

Rough shaping

The blank is taken to the draw knife and spoke shave. This is the part that takes the most time and reveals the most character: where grain runs out, where figure appears, where the wood wants to split and where it wants to yield. You work with it. The form that emerges is a collaboration.

Sanding and finishing

Each piece is sanded through progressively finer grits — 80, 120, 180, 220 — until the surface is smooth enough to reveal the full depth of the wood's figure. The finish is a penetrating oil, not a film: it feeds the wood rather than sealing it away behind plastic. Over years of use it darkens and deepens. The piece improves.

Fitting and finishing touches

A walking stick is a tool as much as it is an object. The grip must fit the hand. The length must suit the person. Hardware — ferrules, grips, any brass fittings — is chosen to last as long as the wood. Nothing is glued in that should be removable; nothing is removable that should be fixed.

The Trail Stick

A walking companion shaped for the long haul. The Trail Stick is sized for trekking — balanced for uneven ground, comfortable on a descent, strong enough to trust on a steep climb. Black walnut gives it a depth of color that only grows richer as it ages.

Every blank comes from an American tree: black walnut, white ash, cherry, or osage orange. Not because it is cheaper — it isn't — but because it is better, and because it means something to where this work comes from.

No machines that do the thinking

A lathe shapes a cylinder. A hand shapes a stick. The difference is that a hand responds to the wood — it reads the grain, avoids the checks, follows the figure. That is where the character comes from.

Finished to improve with age

The oil finish we use feeds the wood. It does not seal it in plastic. Over years and use, it darkens and deepens. A Root & Stave piece at five years of use looks better than it did at five days.

Built to be kept, not returned

We do not sell walking sticks the way a pharmacy sells them. We make objects you will own for twenty years and then decide who gets them. That is a different thing entirely.
